Re: Slightly OT: Yahoo Groups Web Pages

Only slightly, I hope -- I subscribe only to astronomy-related Yahoo

Many web pages in the various Yahoo groups, including the "Messages"
pages, show constant loading activity in the browser's activity
indicator. The pages seem to have finished loading, but the little
wheel or whatever continues to spin, sometimes for minutes, sometimes
for hours -- I can leave the computer with the page open and come back
hours later and the loading indicator is still spinning. I'm afraid the
indicators' little gears will wear out.

The above is true in FireFox and MSIE under Win XP Pro /and/ Firefox,
MSIE, and Safari under Mac OS X. ISP is Comcast cable.

Commonality: Wireless base station > router > cable modem > world --
but no other web site that I visit exhibits this behaviour, and I have
no network or Internet-access problems. Anyone else?

I've occasionally seen the behavior you describe, but not with the Yahoo
groups pages. And I'm not able to duplicate it with a handful of
astronomy related Yahoo groups I subscribe to. My setup is Firefox on
XP, satellite modem, world. I also use a filter that blocks web bugs and
the Yahoo ads, some of which are flash based and might appear to never
finish loading. However, when I disable the filter I still don't see the
ever spinning wheel. You might want to try a network monitor to see what
kind of traffic you have going on.

One thing that I think can cause the problem is a site that uses a web
bug, but the URL the bug links to is down. The page appears to be loaded
(nothing obvious is missing), and behaves normally, but the spinner
keeps going as the browser tries to load the inaccessible bug. Yahoo
does use web bugs.
