Re: Amateur astronomers prove their mettle

Earned their way - HAH?

Toe'd the party line and did nothing controversial, maybe.

A prime example of how canalized 'pro' astronomers are
is the recent IR webcam observations of Venus.
Done by an amateur!

Other prime examples are the stunning works being done
by amateurs with webcams and small scopes, via clever
software techniques. When I tried to do some of these
things in the early nineties (with pro ccd's and scopes)
I was shot down in flames by some of the bigger names
of asstronomy. Who are still around BTW.

Sour Grapes - hell yeah!

A lot of the pro's NEVER even LOOK at the night sky...
And are really only fashion victims of the latest fads.
They are adept political animals, and know who to BJ.

So lots of GOOD quality 1-2 (even 4m) class scopes for
amateurs is better value than 1 or 2 shrines for the 'elite'
IMHO

Imagination and passion beats arrogance and conservatism
everytime!
