Are you talking about some cases of not being able to see dim objects as
well as others, or most of them? I think that for many cases, acuity
*is* a prominent factor. If an object is blurry, its surface brightness
is reduced, making it harder to see dim ones.

Sky and Telescope had an article about this recently--look up night
myopia. People have differing ideas about what causes night myopia, but
they don't disagree on one point: that it reduces your estimate of the
limiting magnitude. Correct for it, and your limiting magnitude (with
the unaided eye) should increase--sometimes significantly.

Of course, some people *do* have lower sensitivity to light, but I think
that's only part of the story.
