Re: Meade 114 AT EQ

I got one of these scopes as a gift. It is my first scope so please bear
with me. I've been able to find Jupiter and 4 moons, the moon, etc... and
the images are nice.

Here's my problem:

I have read and re-read the manual that comes with it in terms of aligning
the scope. I must just be daft because I can't get the red-dot finder to
work. I followed the manual and tried to line it up with a street light,
that seemed to be ok, but the finder itself will not tighten down properly
so it doesn't move. I'm afraid to take a pair of pliers and tighten it down
for fear I'll ruin something.

While I don't own a Meade, you might try putting a thin shim of plastic or cardboard under the finder. If that doesn't work and the dealer is local, ask the dealer.

It makes it difficult to enjoy the scope because I have to align the finder
every time I drag it out.

Also, the manual talks about finding Polaris to set up the scope. Is this
necessary if I know my latitude and longitude?

Yes. I think you have a "north and level" scope (like my older NexStar 114), and I believe the Autostar system requires this, as well as the longitude/latitude and date/time.

Think of it this way: The lat and long establishes the position of the scope, but it doesn't establish that the scope is pointing the right direction (true north) when you start aligning the scope. Pointing the scope toward Polaris (which is easy to find on a clear night--doesn't move much) gives the computer in the Autostar control a shot at finding the other alignment stars you must point to for proper alignment.

Sorry to be so clueless but I'm no expert and I'm getting frustrated with the
myriad adjustments in the mount.

Be patient Grasshopper, and all will be revealed with practice.
