Re: Just got a G-11 and have some questions

Hi Craig,
In regards to the Case, there are many ways one can go, from a cheaper
Contico, or Rubbermaid Case from Somewhere like Wal-Mart, Home
Depot-Lowes, or perhaps you may have a local container store in your
area. in which they might have something suitable?

Lined with Upholstery Foam, and glued in with a bit of contact cement,
you'd have a suiatble case for storage, and transport, but don't expect
protection to be as good as a Pelican would be.

The beauty of the Pelican, is it's tough as nails, is pretty much
waterproof, has durable handles, the pick, and pluck good grade of foam.

If you plan on staying with this mount, the Pelican is a good
investment.

My memory is getting bad, but If I can recall, it is the 1650 case that
is required. I think using the 1620 is doable, but is a tighter fit, and
with the Gemini, you may need the additional space.

Additional space can be handy for stashing a couple of other items like
the controller, CW Shaft, some hardware etc. Downside is larger,
bulkier size-weight, and the requirements of it fitting into a vehicle,
etc.

ATA Approved cases such as Anvil, Calzone, etc, might look really nice,
but these can be murder to deal with, with their already heavy weight
when empty. With the mount inside, it's now murder carrying, getting
down stairs, etc.

I'm quite sure there are a few folks making nice eyepiece holders that
mount onto the G-11 Tripod. About 4-5 years ago, I recall a maker, who
was out at one of the Astrofest Star parties who was custom making a
really nice wooden "table" that slipped right over onto the G-11's
tripod, that the cut out for the table was perfectly beveled, and fit
perfectly where the three legs begin to exit the Semi-Pier and was a
handsome, and practical system.

If you don't already belong, I highly recommend joining the Yahoo
Losmandy G-11 Group, in which there are literal 100's of G-11 owners
who've all trodden down the very same paths as you. Best of luck, Mark

.
