Secret to whom? How was/is it more secret than any other business deal?
I think it's been pretty much common knowledge for qutie some time.
Anyway...what do _I_ read?
Sky and Telescope. Always have, always will. I've been reading it every
month for the last 41 years. I am not kiddin' when I say I'm as
thrilled to see a new issue in the front hall now as I was way back
when I snatched those big manila envelopes from my parents' mailbox.
Astronomy. I still subscribe, but it's not really much my cup of tea
anymore. It is a professionally done magazine with _some_ good material
(mainly Phil Harrington). Mostly, and for a number of years now, it's
been more a "Discover" for astronomy than a magazine aimed at "working"
amateurs. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I look at it for
Phil's column and articles and the ads. That is about it. A boon to the
bored airport newstand browser. The current issue is probably the best
I've seen from Astronomy in a long time, I will say.
Night Sky. The best new astronomy magazine to come along in ages. Yeah,
it's supposedly aimed at novices, but it is very well done and always
has some stuff that will be of interest to observers of _all_ levels.
The Sky at Night. Patrick Moore's magazine. Maybe a few rough edges,
but getting better all the time. Like many, many UK magazines, it comes
with a CD (wonder why U.S. mags haven't picked up on that?) containing
a video of the latest 30 minute Sky at Night TV episode, often a
vintage show, shareware astronomy programs, and more. I really like the
entire package.
Astronomy Now. 'Bout like it's always been; not too good, not too bad.
I pick it up occasionally.
Amateur Astronomy Magazine. It's not really fair to judge this with the
glossy pro-zines, but it stands up fairly well if you like dobs.
The Reflector. Looks better and more professional all the time. It
could be expanded beyond being _just_ a news-zine for the AL, but it
does that very well.
APJ. The Department gets a copy and I enjoy reading those articles I
can understand (IOW, a quick read for me most of the time).
;-)
