Are there any reasonably dark observing sites left within a few hours'

Laks Sonoma is pretty dark, about 2 hrs (allowing for traffic) from SF,
north on 101 to Healdsburg.
Most of Lake County is very dark. Seeing is pretty good there too, as a
rule. About 1.5 -2 hrs NNE of San Francisco.
Mt. Tamalpias, when the San Francisco Amateur Astronomers have a star
party or a private observing session (once a month for each). Usually in
the summer, fog blankets the city and some of the east bay at night. This
transforms Mt. Tamalpias into a lovely place to observe.
Schedules can be found at the
SFAA website: http://sfaa-astronomy.org
In my town (Fairfax, CA) there is a pretty decent observing spot 4 miles
up the Bolinas-Fairfax Road called Azellia Hill. Some of the SF light
dome intrudes from the SW, but all in all, it's a great site and close to
home for me. Location:

Good luck and enjoy your stay.
