I have the Tele Vue hat. I purchased it through Astromart a number of
years ago.
The Tele Vue hat is very well made. All curves seem to be well matched
and the quality of materials and assembly is equal to the vocational
demands for this accessory. With use and over time, the hat will
exhibit some colour around the sweatband, but this does not affect
viewing at all. For those with follicle challenges, the hat has the
added effects of both reducing reflective sky glow at star parties and
insulating your central processing unit. Being fully adjustable the hat
can be used by owners of Newtonians, SCT's and refractors regardless
of their size.
The bill of the hat is well finished and has good solar spectrum cut
off during the day as well as keeping dew off the user's nose at
night.
Eye relief is outstanding! The hat exhibits neither spherical nor
chromatic aberrations. However, coma is possible if the hat is used in
lieu of protective gear during observatory construction.
The best feature of the hat is that it exhibits a good range of motion
both in azimuth and altitude. Care must be taken during positioning
when bill approaches zenith, as the hat becomes very unstable.
Al has worked his magic on this one! One thing to watch out for: the
hat has the strange effect of having others bob their heads up and down
when they see it.
John,
I admit the Televue hat is excellent, and I do own one. I do somewhat
prefer the blue/gray bill of my Stellafane hat over the green bill of the
Televue hat. For visibility, it is tough to beat Barlow Bob's yellow "NEAF
Solar Star Party" hat, and for cool living in the hot weather the mesh back
of my Elk Creek Valley gives it the nod.
You really need a number of hats for different hat wearing situations, just
like you couldn't possibly get along with one telescope.
Clear skies, Alan
.
