As long as you keep in mind that you are seeing an illusion created by
your brain, and not your eyes. Optically, you don't have the resolution
to detect individual stars near the core, nor to see through the
cluster. And the reason that the stars appear the same size is because
of the low sensitivity of your eyes and the fact that most stars in the
cluster are of similar brightness. With careful observation of brighter
clusters, you should see brighter stars have larger apparent diameters
(although you may need a fairly large aperture to see this).
The image exceeds your visual view in terms of both resolution and
depth. So this comes down to simple aesthetics; some people prefer the
view through the eyepiece, some prefer the image. Neither is right or
wrong, of course (although there is no doubt that the information
content of the image is vastly greater).
