I think the recent spammers that are targeting Starlord are way out of
line. But sometimes posts like this make me wonder if they might be on to
something...

Starlord is diabetic and lives on a tight, fixed income that allows no
leeway for unforeseen expenses. Sometimes, when he has had an emergency
that takes his small amount of spare cash, he neglects his diet and the
result is a hyperglycemic episode -- or is it HYPOglycemic -- anyway, his
blood sugar bottoms out. When blood sugar reaches a critically low point,
the individual becomes more and more incoherent, loses motor control,
sweats profusely, becomes more incoherent and disoriented, then passes
out. If help doesn't come soon, he could die.
If he posts while he's experiencing one of these episodes, his posts tend
to wander and be almost unreadable.
My 82-year-old mother has these from time to time and we end up in the
emergency room on with a dextrose IV.
When one is a diabetic, depending on the severity, one must take insulin or
other medications. Those medications are taken based upon diet, exercise,
and regular blood sugar readings taken by the patient...
If the patient administers medication, especially insulin, and then doesn't
eat, or doesn't eat enough of the right things, hypoglycemia can EASILY be
the result. Hypoglycemia can vary from the individual being mildly
confused, and having slurred speach, and their thought processes being
somewhat dysfunctional, to being seriously dysfunctional, with behavior much
the same as being VERY drunk. To the degree where, if the episode isn't
quickly brought under control with glucose, the patient can lapse into a
coma and die...
I am a diabetic, and have experienced hypoglycemia on numerous occasions;
not from being unable to eat, but from trying TOO hard, through my diet and
exercise program, to maintain a lower blood sugar level than really
necessary... I've learned the error of my ways, but I STILL occasionally
find myself falling into the old habit of deliberately pushing my blood
sugar level lower than necessary, and have to remind myself (once again)
that having a blood-glucose profile lower than a non-diabetic is basically
illogical (*in control* is one thing; TOO low is another), and can be
dangerous...
In my case, it's been an ego-driven thing, to show myself that I can manage
my blood sugar at levels even lower than a non-diabetic person, and do it
with little or no medication... I no longer require insulin injections, and
have eliminated the need for one of my oral medications, but I still take
Metformin, and on Fridays, so I CAN enjoy myself once a week and allow
myself some leeway in my diet to go out for Mexican or Chinese food with my
wife, I will take a Glucophage tablet to buffer against the extra
carbohydrates... And that one little blue pill can send my blood-glucose
level right through the floor, if I don't eat eat enough of the right thing
to balance it... So I understand this situation quite well. And NO alcohol
is required to deliver this kind of behavior; it, like many other things,
isn't in my diet... But I'm sure familiar with hypoglycemia. Been there;
done that...
