According to a documentary I saw on the Science Channel a while back.
The moon is not made of cheese but there is too much radiation on the
moon for a human to walk with just a spacesuit. The Astronauts would
have been protected in their spaceship from the radiation but would
have been dead from exposure in their suits.
The skin of the LEMs was 12 mils and was not much protection. The
astronauts where exposed to radiation most of the time. Fortunately
there were no earth-moon directed CMEs during any of the Apollo
missions.
Radiation protection is a yet unsolved problem for those traveling
to Mars in a 7-9 month transfer orbit.
