The newest Moderated sci.astro.amateur board allows members to create
their own polls. There are now five up and running. Members can vote
and guests can view the results.
Polls appearing now:
1. MOTIVATION (10 straight clear and moonless nights. . .on how many
will you do some observing?)
2. WEIGH IN (If you could only observe one of the following for a
year, it would be:)
3. HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOIN' ON? (How long have you been an
amateur astronomer?)
4. THE COST OF AMATEUR ASTRONOMY (About how much money do you have
invested in amateur astronomy?)
5. NAKED EYE OBSERVING (How much of it do you do and how satisfying
do you find it?)

There is a new church every day. Maybe we should just clean up the old
one?
A good place to start would be for you to use your real name on your
posts but that isn't going to happen. For the many years I have been
taking from and contributing to sci.astro.amateur, there has always
been a constant desire expressed for a moderated version of the
group. That ain't gonna happen usenet-wise so I am spending my money
and my time (lots of it) to offer that alternative to those who want
it, WHEN THEY WANT IT. I make no apologies to anyone that this had to
be done in a web based forum. . .but a forum nonetheless composed of
your fellow sci.astro.amateur members. Have you visited the site? If
you did, you would surely recognize some of our contributors and
members names from the usenet sci.astro.amateur.
I have lit a candle in an effort to stop some from cursing the
darkness. A visit to Moderated sci.astro.amateur will reveal what I
bet is what you and others would like to see sci.astro.amateur
become. Say what you want, but nothing anyone can assert will
diminish the good intent I had in creating and have in maintaining the
site.
As for my updates for goings on over there, if you don't want to read
them, then don't. They have been, and will continue to be, clearly
marked as such.

Of all the moderated versions I can imagine, I would think yours
fair but I visited your site and I did not like the way topics were
parsed into a small number of catagories. That seems to defeat the free flow
and natural diversity of a ng where all kinds of things
come up, and overlap at times.
I realise some people prefer just that - narrow boxes (the way our
anestors liked caves?).
But Martin dont wear yourself out with this and get disappointed or
upset if it doesnt live up to expectations. Maybe it will. There are
pros and cons and potential in many directions depending on what
people do.... but I understand your motivation (time honored).
Good luck.
Jerry
