Re: Mac drivers for DSI Pro?

Rob Johnson:
...
Their list of unsupported cameras includes the Meade Captureview
(binoculars with a built-in video camera), but I don't know if that
has the same chipset as the DSI Pro.

RMOLLISE:
It doesn't. None of these drivers will work with the DSI. It's purty
different, I understand, and that's why it has not been widely
supported. Oh, there is SOME 3rd party support for the DSI. K3CCD, Phd
Guiding, and Maxim DL do support it, but, unfortunately, that does not
help the original poster, as they are all PC apps. I would guess that
the reason for that is that they are actually using the Meade drivers,
basically, but I ain't computer literate enough to tell ya for shore.

That brings to mind something I forgot to mention in my earlier reply.
AFAIK, Meade is the only major camera manufacturer with no Mac support.
Developers say the reason there is no Mac support for Meade products is
that Meade /hates/ the Mac. A number of Mac developers have tried to
obtain the Meade SDK, but Meade steadfastly refuses to allow anyone
develop for the Mac. Dr. Jeff Terry (iCCD) said "I have made multiple
requests to Meade to support the DSI. They have repeatedly ignored me
with the exception of one hit to the iCCD website." A large developer
said that if Meade could find a way to block control of its mounts by
Macs it would probably do so. Luckily for Mac astronomers who like
Meade 'scopes, the mount has no way of knowing where the control codes
are coming from! That no longer matters to me; Meade has lost me as a
customer over their lack of Mac support, but they don't care, and
neither do I.

Much of the world has taken note of Mac sales trends over the past 18
months, particularly the fact that Macs comprise over 15 percent of
laptop sales. Doug George (author of Maxim DL, for my money the best
CCD image processing software extant) told me in early 2006 that there
would /not/ be a Mac version of Maxim DL. One year later he told me he
is /considering/ a Mac version, and that I could quote him on that.
Meade is big enough to be able to say that they will exclude 15 percent
(and growing) of the market.

Analysts differ on where the Macs penetration of the laptop market will
level off. Conservatives say 25 percent or so, while other analysts
(including those who have themselves dumped Windows in favor of Macs)
say that as more would-be switchers learn that Macs cost less than
[roughly equivalent] Windows-only machines and that Macs /are/ Windows
machines, it makes no sense for anyone to buy anything but a Mac
portable. Paul Rodman, author of Astroplanner (Mac & Windows) reports
that his customers are 25 percent Mac and 75 percent Windows, with a
down trend in the percentage buying the Windows version.

None of the above remarks on Mac market share applies in Guffey,
Colorado, where Mac sales are zero -- except for one small Mac software
developer located in Guffey ;-) Newspapers around the world reported on
their front pages on 25 July "[Apple] shipped 1.76 million Macs during
the quarter, representing 33 percent growth over the year-ago quarter.
This represents the most Macs ever sold in a quarter..." (NYT,
circulation: 1.2 million.) (That's Macintosh computers, not iPods,
which were up only 21 percent year-over-year) The Guffey Morning Herald
(circulation: 1.3 million) reported "Mac sales dropped to zero in the
last quarter." ;-) Outside of Guffey, Colorado, the Mac beat market
growth by nearly 300 percent; world-wide, computer shipments were up
11.7 percent year-over-year (Gartner.) Meanwhile, back in Guffey,
residents were surprised to learn that there /is/ an outside of Guffey,
Colorado.

1997: "I'd shut [Apple] down and give the money back to the
shareholders." -- Michael Dell.

2007: Dell market cap: $63.42bn; DELL 52-week change: 35 percent. Apple
market cap: $126.30bn; APPL 52-week change: 98 percent.

iPhone sales, the first 30 hours: 9,000 per hour.
