Thanks,Craig- I shall give that a go!

May I ask if anyone here has experience of solar observing through a
GOTO SCT? For 19 years I have used an old Meade SCT-MTS 8 inch., with
an LX-3 tracking motor for general observing- including the Sun via a
full aperture Inconel filter for white light, or a Daystar T
Scanner/Energy Rejection Filter combo for H alpha.
. All very satisfactory, but as is perhaps inevitable, the LX3 motor
has finally packed up, and is , needless to say "out of print"! All
good things come to an end...

I am considering buying a LX90 GPS as replacement, but wonder if I
can still observe and track the Sun in White light or H Alpha-
providing of course I continue with full aperture Inconel or energy
rejection filters! I understand the vast 30,000+ database does not
include the Sun - for safety reasons.
Fair enough, but I would hope to be able to acquire it manually, and
then set the tracker to keep it in view.
Does anyone know if this will be possible, or won't the electronics
allow it??
If not, I could view the Sun with all the electronics switched off
and not track it, but on a hectic day, recording the spots then
becomes something of a jamboree. Today, BTW, the Sun was spotless...
Any advice, please?

Hi Michael,

Yes you can use an LX90 to acquire and track the sun. What I've done in
set up a fake asteroid directly opposite the earth and go to that. The
system will then track automatically.
