Well, articles will disappear from your news server after a certain
period, unless you are one a small number of archive servers -
Google Groups being the one that springs to mind. That usually
takes anything from a couple of days to a fortnight, but can be
less - I notice that posts to alt.* groups sometimes expire in
under 24 hours on my server, for instance.
As for removing someone else's posts, yes, that is easy enough to
do if you are so inclined. NNTP isn't particularly secure and so
whilst most news reader software will not let you cancel someone
else's posts, it's easy enough to bypass that if you want. I've
done this a couple of times myself, to cancel my own articles from
a different system to that I used to make the original post. You
can also do something similar with a Supercedes: header, which will
cause most news servers to drop the referenced article in favour
of the new one.
