Anyone started doing much Mars observing yet?
What are your thoughts about how difficult it will be to observe this
year?
As it happens, I've had enough trouble sleeping so that some mornings,
I'm up at 3 AM, a suitable time to observe Mars. And, indeed, it's on
a part of the ecliptic nicely north of the celestial equator - visible
from my backyard which has too many trees around it for a good view of
the Southern horizon.
I just got a new telescope myself - finally deciding to move up from
my 4" Schmidt-Cassegrain to an 8" telescope (but not a refractor!) but
my first attempt to use it didn't get as far as I'd like as it aligns
differently from my old telescope. But I think I'll get the hang of it
on my next try.

Well, I hope the folks here all share their experiences over the weeks
to come.
What 8" scope are you using, John?
