Thank You for Advice on Binoculars

Way back on September 1, I posted a request for advice on buying binoculars.
Thank you to all who replied.

After digesting all of the suggestions, I decided that I wanted to own
10x50s and ended up getting Leupold Mesa Green Ring 10x50s. I've now had
them for a month and am quite happy with them. Compared to my old 8x30s and
now defunct 7x50s, everything in the sky seems amazingly bright. Uranus
used to be a struggle, but it is now a very easy object in my badly light
polluted New Jersey sky - even on hazy nights. I have yet to knowingly pick
out Neptune, but am still working on it. I'm pretty sure I saw Ceres the
last two nights and will continue to track it through its upcoming
opposition and brightness peak.

How did I settle on Leupold, since I hadn't been familiar with them?
Actually it was by accident. There were two or three 10x50s I was
considering ordering on line but all were out of stock. I checked the few
nearby stores carrying binoculars, but found none that interested me. Then
at the end of September while my wife and I were visiting in Fort Worth, I
found these at Cabela's, a hunting and outdoors store that had a quite large
optical department. The specifications printed on the box met my
requirements, and the sample looked good and was comfortable to hold, so I
took a chance and bought them. They cost $200, which was right in the
middle of the range I wanted to spend.

Leupold just does not market to astronomers. They probably get all of the
business they need from the hunters and bird watchers. But I have no
complaints so far. I wear glasses, so wanted and got good eye relief and
twist down rather than roll back eye cups. These hold their focus very
well. I put on the lens caps and return the binoculars to their case when
done each night, but the next time I use them they are still in focus. With
my old binoculars I was constantly adjusting the focus. I don't find them
excessively heavy and using them hand held has not been a problem.

So again, thank you.

Charlie
