And like happened with apos, I know we are all eagerly awaiting the
60% cost cuts we'll see at the stores for SCTs.
What's that? Meade isn't passing them on? Oh well....
But Celestron is making their SCTs in China too now.
And there are companies importing Maksutov-Cassegrains from China,
which compete at the lower-end of aperture with SCTs at least, and
they are passing on the low prices.
So while the start-up costs of transferring production are being
recovered by not lowering prices immediately (the assumption being
made that quality will be maintained fully! - otherwise there is no
getting away with that) presumably the same slackening in demand that
leads to a need to cut _costs_ will also lead to a need to cut prices.
In due course.
Of course, some of that 60% savings we are already seeing even before
the production moved. The price of an SCT has not kept pace with
inflation since even, say, 1976. So they must have been made by
automated methods when made recently in the U.S., methods that would
be uneconomical in China. So they haven't really been selling at
normal made-in-America prices for quite some time.
For an example of a made-in-America price, think Questar. Perhaps
that's unfair. But it may also be true that while today's made-in-
America SCT prices are already partly made-in-China prices, that just
means that it will be a 60% savings instead of a 90% savings when it
comes.

I wonder if like the other scopes, we'll see Orion selling them under
their own name?
