I'm an astronomy newbie and looking for a pair of entry level binoculars.
Hi Kinney
Have you bought those Nikons yet?
I suggest you also consider Canon's 8x40 PCF-WP (Weather proof) model.
They are a bit more expensive but worth it.
Whenever I go on a week-end trip, I take my 8x40's and Sky and
Telescope's Pocket Sky Atlas along.
Just about a month ago, I stumbled onto Comet Holmes by accident using
8x40s on just such a trip by sweeping the skies for interesting
asterisms.
Their light weight is ideal for extended use and due to the lower
magnification, you don't get all those nasty jiggly stars you would
get with a 10x50 pair. I also own a Nikon 10x50 Action but use them
exclusively with a tripod.
A decent pair of binoculars will provide endless joy, especially in
8x40!
Good luck.
