<snip> Looks like it'll cost about $200 for a Kendrick

I skipped the controller and just use an eyepiece heater and the DEW
cigarette plug. That came to about $40. See the Scopestuff page at:

The controller is nice, but you can get by by to heat your lenses up
slightly past ambient and unplug the heater. Then can forget about
the lens for a 1/2 hour. In really cold weather (less than freezing),
I usually just end up leaving them plugged in.
As others have noted, AA's don't have enough juice to perform the
task. If you going to get into dew heaters, you are talking about
"extra" outlays for either:
1) Use it near your home on an extension cord and 120AC-12.5 DC
converter.
2) Or from remote sites, deep cell marine or auto batteries and a
power inverter.
Either way, it is not a $30 project to get totally set up for cold
weather viewing, but it is worth the trouble to extend your season.
