There IS not shielding on these things, none of them, that is the
point. They are flush with the sides of buildings.
Maybe you could provide a link to an image? Your rather hysterical post
doesn't inspire confidence in your assessment. Are you sure there is no
shielding? Just because a display is on the side of a building doesn't
mean that the LEDs aren't directed. Do you actually know what this sign
looks like from the sky?
In addition, (if
you are a desert dweller) light is "piped" high into the air by any
moisure content in that air so even shielding isn't totally effective.
Obviously, cities produce light. They always will, and there is no
getting around that. But a distinction has to be made between completely
wasted light, which is what you have with unshielded lights, or upward
directed lights, and the natural losses that are unavoidable with even
well designed lighting.
Railing on about a single sign seems to me silly when the city is
otherwise full of light sources that, because of their design, not only
produce light pollution, but don't even work well for their intended
purpose.
