When the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope comes on board, I don't see

Almost every clear night when I'm out walking I discover something
new, but I guess that doesn't count.
The excitement in someones voice when they first see the moons of
Jupiter or the rings of Saturn, but I guess that doesn't count.
In my post I did not intend to demean celestial appreciation nor
celestial self-discovery. Those are wonderful pursuits but they aren't
astronomy in the pure sense, which is the scientific study of the
heavens.
Amateurs make new discoveries because the professionals can't look
everywhere all the time. LSST won't completely eliminate amateur
discoveries but it will make a big dent.
