The Earth's orientation in space is indeed fixed.

The plane defined by the Equator, though, is not the same as the plane
defined by the Earth's orbit around the Sun.

And the Earth orbits the Sun, moving from one side of it to the other,
so sometimes the Sun is above the Equator, and sometimes it is below
it. The Earth does not have to tilt "this way and that way" to make
this happen.
