The words of Kepler resound like a bell in its call to astronomers to
dispel the intrusion of astrologers and their astrological
'predictive' thinking into astronomy all wrapped up in their
idiosyncratic framework to which the motions of the Earth are tied -

Science is all about reducing phenomena to mechanism, so that
underlying physical laws can be used to predict motions. Finding
causes, not just correlations, is what is desired. Kepler did not
oppose that effort; he *attempted* to find the cause of the orbital
correlations he discovered, but could not succeed. To suggest Kepler
would oppose Newton's successful effort is... nonsense.

And let us not forget that Kepler supplemented his income by
casting horoscopes...

Or that the final victory of the empiricists over superstition meant
that no one would again have to worry about his mother being falsely
accused of being a witch, as Kepler did.
