Re: What telescope vendors and companies will close in 2009?

Too_Many_Tools:
If you have been paying attention you will know that small business
credit in nonexistent.

Any small business is limited to cash on hand.

All businesses including banks are hoarding cash since no one knows
where the bottom is on this recession.

It is also why consumers have stopped spending on anything but
essentials.

The problem is your absolutism. The best anyone can do is generalize,
and that's easy enough to do in the current financial crisis.

Substitute "is tightly constricted" for "nonexistent."

Substitute "Many small businesses" for "Any small business."

Substitute "Many businesses" for "All businesses."

Substitute "many consumers" or perhaps even "most consumers" for
"consumers."

It would be difficult, then, to argue with your assertions.

My credit card issuer, a bank that Bush partially nationalized and that
Obama may be forced to further or fully nationalize, raised my credit
limit in December and again this month. I don't borrow money from
credit card companies or from anyone else, but they are desperately
hoping that I will make some huge purchase and not pay in full the next
month. Not gonna happen, as George H.W would put it.

You see, there is a minority class of businesses and individuals,
apparently outside your experience, who do things differently to most.
These entities--the businesses and the individuals--do not do business
by borrowing--not even short term. The individuals will make an
exception for a house--with not less than 20% down, and early pay-off.
They maintain substantial cash reserves. They may live well compared to
the general population, but they don't live ostentatiously--they don't
spend their money on silly things that have no purpose other than to
flaunt their wealth to others. They know that good fortune plays a part
in their circumstances, and they are not smug. This gives them
considerable leeway when it comes to spending for things they want.

Let me make this clear--I know nothing or nearly nothing about
economics or finance outside my own milieu. I'm very dated in my
thinking--I refuse to spend money that I don't have. I'm told by people
who _do_ know that if enough people lived as I described above we would
be, collectively, wealthy and influential beyond comparison. I know,
too, that being poor sucks (been there) and that smart, determined
people can become wealthy--or wealthy enough to be able to satisfy more
than just their basic needs--by working and saving.

As long as you generalize you are correct about the financial situation
in the world today. Now that you know about the class that I described,
though, you will understand why absolute declarations don't apply.

Me? I don't want to get _too_personal here, but I'm taking a pile of
discretionary dollars to NEAF--on top of the AP 1200GTO that I bought
recently <http://www.primordial-light.com/technique.html> :) I may not
spend a penny of it, probably won't, but I will be comfortable knowing
that I won't have to pass up a good deal if it comes my way. With so
many people--but not everyone--in the situation you have described, the
likelihood of running into such a deal at NEAF may be better than ever!
