That's a popular misconception! It was really the Minuteman II missile
program that jump-started the integrated circuit industry.

The Minuteman II missile did indeed create a government demand for
integrated circuits, but there is a big leap between a 7404 hex
inverter and the Intel 4004 microprocessor. There is an even bigger
leap between the Intel 4004 microprocessor and what NASA needed and
got later on. There was an even bigger leap between the Intel 8080/
Zilog Z80and what IBM created with the IBM-5150 (what is/was called a
PC)
