Chris L Peterson:
Well, the poll conducted by AAAS/NAS a few years ago is well known and
of high quality. What it demonstrates is that belief in a personal god
is very low (approx 10%) amongst top-of-their-field scientists. I read
in Science (maybe two years ago? I can't find the reference) of a
similar poll that was not limited to NAS fellows, and the results were,
IIRC, less than 20% believers.
The numbers are all over the map. I've searched the sciencemag.org
archives and can't find the poll, either. Maybe I (we) read about it
elsewhere?
I found this 2007 story
<http://pewresearch.org/pubs/578/when-science-and-faith-compete-faith-us
ually-wins>, which says "...a significant number of scientists
roughly a third according to a 2006 Rice University survey of more than
750 professors in the natural sciences do not believe in God,
compared with only one-in-twenty in the general population. But
regardless of their personal views, most scientists tend to view the
two disciplines as distinct, with each attempting to answer different
kinds of questions using different methods. The late evolutionary
biologist Stephen Jay Gould famously referred to this complementary
relationship as 'non-overlapping magisteria.'"
If true, that would suggest that perhaps 2/3 of scientists don't find
religious faith paradoxical--they are rendering unto Caesar the things
which are Caesar¹s, and unto God the things that are God¹s. - Jesus,
paraphrased from Matthew, 22:21.

If I were _sure_ of the answers, to talk to me you would probably have
to climb a high mountain in Tibet while naked and devoid of all
material possessions to beg my acolytes for an audience, which I might
consider granting after you had learned humility during your 20 years'
penance as a gatherer of yak dung. Note that I did not say that *I*
would be on that high mountain. If I granted your audience you would
then travel to my Caribbean island estate for your brief audience with
me.
