Hi Paul
The talks still have had some value for me.
Me too, I'll add.
I have looked into what causes each ripple in the equation of time.
I realized that on the equator, the sun always rise from and set to
the same points on the horizon, regardless of the time of year
Whoops. That's not what happens.
As we speak, I'm in the process of rendering (albeit oh so
excruciatingly slowly) the fourth of six animations designed to make
it somewhat easier for people to visualize all this fancy rotation
stuff.
One of them--probably the animation of Earth as seen from the L5
point--will easily disabuse you of the notion that the Sun always
rises in the same place as viewed from the Equator.
Stay tuned; the project should be ready for online publication in
about two or three weeks.
In the mean time, imagine the relationship between the terminator and
the equator at Winter solstice. The Northern hemisphere is tilted
back away from the Sun by 23.4° and the equator is tilted up out of
the orbital plane by the same amount. Imagine you're on the equator
at sunrise on the Winter solstice. The Sun rises 23.4° south of due
East.

It can be difficult to understand how the rising point (azimuth) of the
sun on the equator does shift during the year but it always rises
perpendicularly. It seems more intuitive to visualize the sun always
rising due east on the equator, but taking a different track, depending
on the time of year. The actual case is hard to imagine because it
involves visualizing the curved path of the sun across the sky as seen
by an observer on an apparently flat earth.
Let me help you out.
The software for Ra/Dec observing and interpreting is basically a
conversion of the raw astronomical cycle based on 365 days 5 hours 49
minutes into a linear progression of 365/366 days where everything is
run off the daily cycle and rotational orientation or 'tilt' as it is
known.
Now,to put this into a perspective that maybe a few reasonable people
may understand. All the systems which combine to make it possible for
me to send you this message almost instantly require that each system
works neatly with the other - software, hardware, structural
architecture of the usenet, communications systems and all those things
I admire from a distance. It is grotesque to see guys who, within living
memory, created the enormous archictecture for all this amazing
achievement, fail to comprehend its astronomical equivalent but I do
understand why in the same way that most of the computer and
communication system is over my head.
Walking into a room of software wizards or engineers who have their
own language would be daunting if not impossible for those unfamiliar
with the material, individual topics and how they relate to each other
hence how many here would see the problem of using the calendar system
of 365/366 days to express the raw orbital cycle of 365 days 5 hours
49 minutes, how it relates to planetary dynamics , filters into the
daily cycle as an independent motion or the terrestrial consequences
of these motions. The point is that there is so pride in watching
people interact as they describe systems and details on which they are
focused yet I have to play footsoldier and general to the astronomical
equivalent.
You use terms like 'tilted away ' ,which is a verb denoting an action
but the actual dynamic which keeps the 'tilt' of the Earth point in
one direction in space and changing to the central Sun is an intrinsic
effect of the specific way the planet orbits the Sun.Whereas people
dealing with computer and communications system deal with a
shortcoming and error,no such platform exists to handle the problem of
the Ra/Dec reference system and allow the original raw astronomical
cycle to resolve the difficulties created by the calendar/astrological
framework.
