Now if we could just invent a light drive we could nip off to a point
a couple of millennia away. Then point our telescopes back at the bum
Jesus and his gay, hippy mates sponging off the unwashed and
uneducated locals. Who earned a crust by impressing them with cheap
conjuring tricks and even cheaper drug trips. (and offering public
dips in the local rivers to the locals for another crust and a bit of
dried fish) Or not. It's all a matter of interpretation of the
evidence. The experi-mental evidence is that some people will believe
absolutely anything. Emphasis on the "mental". Anybody who places his
belief in anything said by the illiterate, unwashed and uneducated
peasants of the time, but recorded several hundred years later, should
be encouraged to go into the streets of their own locality and talk to
their present equivalent for signs of intelligent life. Then ask them
to articulate their personal observations of a local "magician" with
special powers and severe problems with the authorities. The latter
apparently completely unable to find the thick file on the trouble
maker and his gang of wasters despite a pedantic obsession with
paperwork and spying on potentially dangerous locals to keep them
under the central control of the evil dictator back in Rome. This
would be the modern equivalent of the local branch of the CIA losing
their files on Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda when Bush was in power. It
didn't happen.
