Dust collect on everything and everything develops a charge. The charge
starts a leader for the bolt to follow and plasma of the vaporize air,
beanstalk, copper cladding, gondola and fulgurites in the soil conduct the
lighting.

The effects of lighting reach well into the stratosphere. Google elves and
sprites.
