15 Days & Counting...

Now, it's just two weeks plus one day away from September 2, 2004.

Thousands of left-wing liberals are gearing up to demonstrate at the RNC which begins August 30th. While most activist demonstrators are generally peaceful and organized, more than a few of them are felonious criminals-many are known to be violent and anything but peaceful.

It's not so much that we're concerned with these violent demonstrators, since the NYPD and guardsmen are all armed to the teeth. Rather, we're much more gravely concerned that violent disruptions by left-wing demonstrators will serve to aid and abet Al-Qaeda sleeper agents who're planning to detonate one or more of their Russian-made suitcase nukes at the RNC, or as near as they can get to it before being spotted by the authorities-at which point the terrorist would surely push the button before his or her 10-kiloton atomic bomb can be disabled by the bomb squad (each suitcase nuke is estimated to be more than half the power of Hiroshima or Nagasaki). Even if the nuke were detonated 20 miles from Madison Square Garden, just the thunderous CRACK of the distant atom bomb alone and ensuing city-wide panic could be as disastrous and lethal at the bomb itself. Such a scenario is too horrible to think about, yet the authorities must be prepared for every contingency, even if it's the very worst possible catastrophe imaginable.

And to complicate matters even further, there is a tremendous confluence of national and world events surrounding the RNC, like the post-9/11 climate of distrust and uncertainty, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the most contentious and equally-divided election year in the history of American politics. Add the global war on terror, and most especially the long shadow of Usama bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda terrorist network looming over the nation and weighing heavily on the minds of everyone concerned, especially those who'll be in and around Manhattan on the evening of President GW Bush's scheduled acceptance speech, and also those in the War Room who'll have to deal with the grim situation under Defcon 1 Alert.

So what, if anything, can be done about all this at this late date, with just 15 days to go?

First, barring unforeseen circumstances, President GW Bush must attend the convention as scheduled. In 2000, he was appointed, not elected, President of the United States (but he's been a fine president nonetheless). If the RNC goes off without a hitch, with no major Al-Qaeda attack, then Bush would miss the grandest moment of his campaign for (re)election. Also, if Bush decided not to attend on account of the clear and present danger of imminent Al-Qaeda attack(s) on NYC, then that would surely look bad to some voters. Bush is a courageous and honorable man, and devoutly religious. He must realize that America's greater destiny is destined to be, and cannot be undone. We are, after all, entering the gate into the fifth world which is verily global. In other words, I don't think Bush is going to back down from terrorist threats, for the good of the whole. I hate to use words like martyr, but it does come to mind.
