It is not the object ('the newfound dark galaxy') itself that appears --
it 'appears to be' which has a different meaning that simply 'appears'.
In this case the 'appearance' relates to inferences that appear from the
collected data, presumably to the naked eye (though probably a solid
amount of interpretation is involved as well <G>).
