History of Astronomy

If one reckons back the 10 days jump of the pope in 1582, one gets the
third century C.E.
as the right time of beginning. I always thought that the cause of
not beginning in the first century B.C.E./the first century C.E.
was the state of astronomical science in the 16th century C.E.

I was told on de.sct.geschichte that a religious factor had played a
part. (Eastern and so on).
How was the state of astronomy in 1582?
