I feel your pain, buddy. I'm a self-funded grad student, without a job.
I haven't bought myself a nice treat for years, and my car is really
starting to make some funny noises.

I don't see these subscriptions as luxuries, but professional expenses.
I think Scientific American, American Scientist and Sky & Telescope are
indispensable resources for physicists and astronomers, and you're
hurting your career if you don't get them. And hell, they're tax
deductible.

I'm in a heavily light polluted area (suburban Detroit), but I managed
to find a camera shop that was clearing out their 2.4 in Meade
telescopes for $50 and thought that was too good a bargain to pass up.
There are a few things you can see, even in a light polluted
environment.

I've seen Saturn's rings, Jupiter's moons, the phases of Venus,
sunspots, and the surface of the Moon. Next on my list are Mars, Mizar
and the Andromeda Galaxy. A light polluted environment is not a reason
to give up observing, it's just a reason to lower your ambitions.

Soon I plan to show these sights to the neighborhood children, and maybe
interest them in science. It's the cool factor that makes the
difference, you know.

What is it that's preventing you from affording a life?
