Thanks, that's what I wanted to be sure about. Now I just need to understand why God created the other 100 billion galaxies, given that nobody can see them.
Possibly because somebody else can :-) That's another example of the extraordinary arrogance of some people - the assumption that not just the Earth but the whole universe is here for our benefit.
This argument is obviously good from your and my point of view, however my objective is to convince creationists to change their minds, consequently it is not arguments that look good to me that are important. I need to get my mind into their head-spaces and find arguments that look good to them.
So getting back to your point, I must work from the assumption that the bible is the true word of God and that we are central to God's plan. On top of that I cannot use any argument that relies too heavily on a scientific technology, like radioactive dating, since that is part of a scientific conspiracy intended to deceive Christians.
Developing clear and simple arguments with such a limited tool set is the fun and challenge of debating Young Earth Creationists.
How about asking them to calculate the volume of Noah's ark, and the space needed to keep two of every kind of animal ?
And then explain why all the salt water fishes didn't die of osmatic shock when the seas were diluted by "the flood" (and conversely why the river fishes didn't die due to excess salt when the seas covered all the Earth). Only salmon and eels would be left if there really had been such a flood.
You are between a rock and a hard place arguing with Creationists. Anything that conflicts with their perverted reading of the Bible is automatically ignored and all the scientific evidence is just put there by the Devil to tempt us. They seek to eliminate science teaching :(
If you believe in a sufficiently omnipotent God then they can create the universe at any time complete with all the necessary boundary conditions to make it look any age. It could even have been created part way through me writing this sentence...
That such a God would be no different to a dodgy antique dealer that distresses his newly created goods to make them look older and more valuable doesn't seem to bother YECs.
Life is too short to spend arguing with them. YMMV
