In a paper to be published in Nature this week (15th December),
[astronomers]
will reveal that around 15% of short-duration bursts originate from
galaxies within 300 million light years of the Milky Way -- more than 10
times closer than previously thought.

a) Short GRBs are caused by a mechanism that needs stars that are either very old or burnt very fast.

b) Most short GRBs occur very close to us.

Conclusion: Most distant stars cannot be old enough to
produce short GRBs.

Sorry, maybe I'm still sleeping but I don't understand at all your
conclusion.
Isn't "being distant" like "being old" in standard theory?

in other galaxies, the stars are OLD. there are OLD stars here, Betelgeuse for instance. But in galaxies we can see MORE OF THEM.
