NYC EVENTS FOR JANUARY 2006

[part 1 of 2]

The following astronomy activities in the commuting ring enclosing
New York City are operated by various organizations. A few cultural
items of special importance to City astronomers may be included.
Altho NYC Events confirms the listed items, they are subject to
change by their sponsors. Check with their contacts. For events which
missed NYC Events, check the NYSkies Yahoogroup forum. Join NYSkies by
sending a blank email to 'nysky-subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx'.
Let the sponsor of an event you attend know that you learned of
its event thru NYC Events. You may ask for the next NYC Events thru
'nyskiesastronomy@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' if you didn't yet join the forum.
All Hours are Eastern Standard Time.

New York transit strike
---------------------
On Tuesday 20 December 2005 at 03:00 EST New York City went under
a labor stoppage on its transit system. This included all subway and
bus lines within the City, but not regional services that work the
surrounds. The strike ended at 14:38 on the 22nd, but it took until
the owl hours on the 23rd to restore full service. The city system
moves about 7 million riders per weekday, fully one half of all
transit riders in the United States.
The loss of transit severely or fatally damaged events from the
20th thru the 22nd by blocking staff and audience from getting to
them. Events beyond the City were deeply hindered by the radical
shifts in road and rail circulation in adjustment to the strike.
It also disrupted the planning of events for January 2006 by
adding to the normal yearend hassles of holidays and facility
closings. While I verified the activities listed here, there may be
others in January that will be announced later on short notice.
If an expected event is an 'XX Jan' entry, please check with its
contacts for latest information.

Lunar occultation of Pleiades
---------------------------
On January 9th, Monday evening, the Moon passes over stars of the
Pleiades cluster. As at issue time there are no announced observing
sessions for this show. Astronomy centers may post news in early
January. Please ask at your local center for viewing session.
