Is there any safe car access to the Mount Hamilton Observatory east of Sansnow
Jose, California at this time of year? They received a good douse of
up there the last few days, and I wanted to go visit the observatory withon
friends, but their homepage is indicating road closure due to ice
conditions. If anyone knows of a safe access route, and any information
whether they take visitors during Winter, I would appreciate the
information.

The access road is a California State Highway, patrolled by the California
Highway Patrol, not by the Observatory or University of California. If the
CHP says you can't drive up the road, then you can't. The Observatory (Lick
Observatory, not Mount Hamilton Observatory) can also be reached along the
same highway from the East, via Livermore or Patterson, but chances are
there is a snow dump on that side as well.
The road is likely to be kept clear for authorised vehicles using a
snowplow, but the idea of blocking access is to prevent drivers from going
over the cliffs after skidding on icy patches. The road is also likely to
be salted and gritted to prevent ice problems, but the CHP is trying to head
off trouble.
If the Observatory has a lot of snow at the summit they will not be able to
accommodate visitors, with no parking, areas adjacent to domes covered in
snow, etc.
Chances are that in California conditions, the snow will melt quickly.
