The weather on the west coast is supposed to be better in the summer

Indeed it is. June and July are excellent months at Mt. Wilson, but
the weather is clear there about half the time even in winter.

I don't think there were any large telescopes in Arizona when
Mr. Hubble was working. June is the best month for clear weather in
Arizona, but July and August are rotten.

On the other hand, I'm told that around the time Kitt Peak was
founded, one saying about the desirability of sites with
comnplementary climate patterns was "everything we know about the
Virgo Cluster was learned during the rainy season in California".
Summers in coastal California have stunningly clear patterns, but
I sat through enough rain and snow storms on Mt. Hamilton to
know that the winter and earlyspring in Arizona give much better
odds.
