Construction and use of a slit spectroscope is an order of magnitude more difficult.
I'm not sure it's really that bad. Wouldn't a slit, a 35 mm camera
lens, a prism, and an eyepiece work? You probably also need a flip-in
mirror or slit viewer to place the star on the slit, and I'd expect
useful spectra only from very bright stars, but putting together
something basic doesn't seem so hard.
Be sure to get a prism made from high-dispersion glass, not BK7.
You will probably get a lot more help in sci.astro.amateur.
