John has found a solution to the Dark Matter problem, and is tidying up his work for publication.
Given this is one of cosmology's biggest problems, and a solution is imminent, I don't think you should be distracting John from this important work to discuss basic high school physics with him.
What is more important? That John knows how to recreate an experiment that has already been running successfuly for 37 years, or that the world finds the solution to the "missing" 90% of the matter in the Universe?
Get some perspective, and leave him alone to get on with his critical research undistracted by such trivia.
