Getting (Free) Astro Pix for Educational Uses or ...

... use in books? I've been scouring the web looking for some images of spectra and material related to them. I'm particularly interested in free images for educational use. Even scouring for NASA in my Google search didn't really get what I wanted. I'm guessing that most anything from the gov would be open for almost any use.
There's so much out there on the web it's hard to tell what might be freely used or not. Probably most is not usable for educational or other uses. One site that looks promising is <http://www.cv.nrao.edu/fits/www/yp_pictures.html>, but maybe not. My Google search shows it as a source of free stock photos.
Although I have no interest in writing a book, I'm curious how authors of science texts get some of their pictures? I suspect that's what publishers are for. Maybe there's a guide book for budding authors that talks about this?
