According to Michael Covington's book, "Astrophotography
for the Amateur", 2d ed, the book of Berry, Kanto and
Munger (1994), "The CCD Camera Cookbook" tells you
how to build your own CCD Camera. Covington also says
that kits and parts for building the camera are available
from University Optics. I just looked at their website and
didn't see anything like that. Are the kits still available
from anyone and, if so, for how much?

This might help...

... especially the cautionary note referencing 2003. My guess is
better chips are available.

I suggest you use the email address at University Optics, and see
what the skinny is *today*, not 15 years ago.

Thanks very much for this information. I looked at the Willman Bell site
and they say that the chips are no longer made by Texas Instruments, so
purchasers of the book seem to be on their own as regards getting the chips.

There probably are better chips available but the information in the book
might depend on the assumption that the camera will be built using a
TC211 or TC245 CCD chip. I'm just a beginner and am easily thrown by little
details, so I really need a book that is tailored to precisely the materials
I would be using. Is it still possible to get these chips from anyone?

I contacted University Optics. Maybe this is the reason they don't seem
to carry the kits anymore.
