It appears that Google is fighting a losing battle against spammers

I can't prove it, but I suspect Google is getting payola for permitting
the spam to flow on USNET. I believe this because they somehow manage to
filter most of the spam out of another service they offer, (Google Mail).

I really appreciate Google Groups, but I have lost all patience for
the spammers who have flagrantly abused their posting host services.
Therefore, with much regret, I have universally UDP'd "googlegroups",
and all replies to their threads which contain said reference to wit:

You're part of a growing movement. *Many* people are adding universal
filters to their newsreaders to kill Google groups. My reader allows me
to filter on the message headers. I drop ALL messages with 'google' in
the Message-ID line.

Messages originating from Google no longer appear in the groups that I
browse. I miss some relevant posts, but the huge decrease in spam and
miscreant postings more than makes up for it.

There are add-on filters for some of the popular readers that can't
filter on specific header lines. (Like Outlook Express and Thunderbird).

The web page below has methods for various news readers to killfile ALL
messages from Google groups.

I don't know how old this site is but it says "FreeAgent and Agent
also cannot filter on the Message-ID header." That's not correct.
Agent (expression language) allows filtering on any line in the header
including the Message ID.
