I was going by:
``Eventually, the number.. must shrink to two... because the number of
extant lineages can only decline with each previous generation - it
cannot increase. When the inevitable decline occurs, the women at
the roots of the two separate lineages would have to be sisters.''
...where the decline to two is what the author fairly explicitly
says he is talking about.
If the quotation contains missing sections - where ".." and "..."
occur - then that explains the origin of the miscommunication.
