I would suggest any of his collections of essays "Hen's Teeth and
Horse's Toes" and the like. Essays are in small chunks. I read them
all. And regular books like "Full House" were good.
"The Beak of the Finch" is a very readable book for us laypersons.
Personally, I think a little background would help before reading it
though. Strictly looking at beak size as evidence of speciation might
be a bit for the uninitiated to swallow (it's been a while, maybe
there's more to it, I forget) Very good book though.

I have read one or 2 other popular authors but found their style
unappealing. Can't even remember their names now. I'd love to read some
others myself.
And there are some decent FAQ's, like talkorigins.org. It has a strong
anti-creationist slant on many of the FAQ's but some are just
straightforward explanations of evolution.
