In Judson's book "The Eighth Day of Creation", there is some interesting
discussion by Crick as to why he chose to call it a "dogma" and some
of the confusion that this choice has caused.
Incidentally, I would heartily recommend this book to Alex, and Gil, and
anyone else who wants to learn something of the history and conceptual
structure of molecular biology. I have never encountered a popular work
which gives such a vivid picture of how science is practiced and of the
logic that goes into the creation of theoretical advances.
Judson set a new standard for the borderline genre between science
journalism and serious scientific biography. And it is much better
written than Segerstrale's account of the Sociobiology controversy,
fascinating though that was.
