It's impossible any other way. Do you know of any scenario where
there is no variation in temp? How do you get variants in no

ISTM that you need two environmental variables, both cycling, but 90 degrees
out of phase with each other. And you need other stuff too. You need
to distinguish two kinds of "enhancement" - kinetic and thermodynamic.
Muller appears to realize this, but ISTM that you and Tom do not.

Well in the above if you are admitting the need for environment
variation for variants - and that is based on the sun/heat cycle,
then I agree.
Now what 'other stuff' is outside of that sun/heat cycle?
