Women usually plan preganancies to mange their careers. For instance, it
rare for university students to get pregant deliberately.
Companies are realistic, so they will try to make it possible for their
female employees to have a baby and a career. But two babies and a career?
Life is competitive, and women without careers have to bid in the housing
market against DINKYs (dual income no kids yets).
The result is that only women at the extreme top or extreme bottom of the
social scale can easily have as many children as they would like.

Efficent contraception and the social changes I have outlined above, driven
by technology which means that most jobs can now be done by women. For the
first time in human history, rich women raise fewer children to adulthood
than poor women.
