Let's do a thought experiment.
We recruit some volunteers, give them distracter tests over a day, and
provide food.
We will find that virtually all the subjects eat some food. The reason is
obvious - organisms need energy to survive.
However let's say it is Yom Kippur, and one of our subjects is an observant
Jew. He won't eat anything. Now we've got a problem - we can explain the
behaviour in terms of his need for group membership, but he is showing a
type of behaviour that is simply unavialable to any non-human animal.
After we've run the experiment for some time, we may recruit an anorexic.
Here it is even more difficult - she is clearly wrecking her reproductive
prospects by refusing to eat, but is she clinically ill? Is she pursuing a
foolish long-term goal by focussing attention on herself? Is her behaviour
immoral?
Human behaviour isn't understood scientifically. We can explain it to an
extent, but we can only go so far.
